Puerto de Rico Gran Canaria

With September now in full swing and the shops being fully stocked in autumn knitwear, fluffy coats and cashmere scarves, Summer 2018 is officially over. And while that doesn’t mean the holidaying is necessarily at its end too (I have a break away next week aghhhh!) I hope we can all look back at the last 3 months or so and think of the tonnes of amazing things we’ve all done. Lounging in the park with a picnic, sipping on Aperol Spritz on a rooftop bar, endless BBQs and Pimms, weddings with the fam, tourism fun around the Capital, long walks in the countryside and of course…Love Island!

It has been a summer not to forget and I can safely say that it was filled to every inch with gorgeous memories, despite that it was the first year out of uni and so I didn’t get to enjoy a lengthy 3 months off!

G and I were lucky enough however, to take a week off work at the end of August to completely switch off. We were so looking forward to it…

Our plan? Lie by a pool, sunbathe, eat delicious food, drink frozen cocktails and come home with a tan.

I am pretty sure we achieved all of those things when we flew out to Gran Canaria.

We started off the holiday with a glass of fizz in the airport lounge and a bite to eat. After a spot of retail therapy, we got on our Jet2 flight and were on our way…

We were staying just outside the town of Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria, which is south of the island. The centre was filled with lots of hotels with bright lights, hundreds of local restaurants and some entertainment outlets with water-sports, swimming pools and crazy golf (which got a bit competitive!)

Our hotel, the Marina Bayview, was an adult only resort situated about 5-minutes walk from the centre of Puerto Rico. The perfect location as to avoid the hustle and bustle of tourism at the beach. We arrived at well into the night, so were not able to explore what was on offer as soon as we checked-in, although the 4 hour flight had made us ready for some beauty sleep.

Over the 7 days we enjoyed sunbathing on the gorgeous beds, swimming in the pool, soaking up the sunshine in the Jacuzzi, lunching in the pool bar, playing cards with a cocktail in hand and eating a huge breakfast every morning. They had absolutely everything spread out for us to choose from whether it was freshly squeeze orange juice, cold meats and cheeses, pastries and baked goodies, fresh fruit, pancakes, frittata, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, or even champagne! I definitely made the most of it.

I’d never been to Gran Canaria before but after our week I can assure you that you are guaranteed insanely consistent HOT weather and well-priced food and drinks. We went out for dinner every night to local restaurants and were surprised with the bill total – but definitely weren’t complaining. We chose a variety of cuisines including seafood (the best in Gran Canaria apparently!), Italian, tapas and paella. The paella was a firm favourite, oh my goodness!

We managed to get ourselves up and out of the hotel for one day, where we booked onto a buggy/jeep tour around the island. We’d read up about it prior to flying out and it had nothing but great reviews, so we thought we would give it a go. It was an absolute blast! The excursion lasted about 5 hours and we drove up volcanic mountains, exploring little towns, an Aloe Vera plantation, local cuisine and breath-taking views that reminded me a lot of the Gran Canyon in America. If any of you are heading to Gran Canaria for a summer break, this is well worth your time (I was recommended to go by a colleague and I am so glad I listened to his advice!) Once you get a hang of the ‘wrong-side-of-the-road’ thing and the dodgy clutch, you’re good to go!

Another gem I was told about by a friend is the Amadores Beach Club which was in the next bay along. Think…Nikki Beach with white sun loungers, Moet champagne everywhere, an in-house DJ and lot of attractive, tanned and #instaworthy guests. The cocktails are next-level-amazing and it is the ideal location for a chilled afternoon. I wish we had found this sooner!

After drinking a lot of rosé, scoffing one too many ice creams and me beating G at yet another game of rummy, our week sadly came to an end. But it left us feeling recharged and energised to come back to work. A bit of fresh air, sunshine and time off is exactly what you need to indulge in every now and again, so if you haven’t had any ‘time-out’, you need it!
